简介:高建路,女,河南浚县人,太原理工大学外国语学院硕士研究生。山西师大学报(社会科学版)研究生论文专刊 第 41 卷 2014 年 9 月论商务电子邮件中的礼貌用语高 建 路摘 要:本文以搜集到的 300 封某公司外销部人员与其国外客户之间的英语电子邮件为语料,主要从语用学角度的不同方面,采用对比研究的方法研究了商务英语电子邮件中的礼貌问题。关键词:商务英语电子邮件;商务沟通;语用学;语境;礼貌原则随着 21 世纪中国经济的迅猛发展,其与世界各国间的贸易往来愈加频繁,商务英语邮件在中外企业间的沟通中扮演着极其重要的角色。在同国外客户的邮件来往中,礼貌成为一个突出的问题。英国著名的语言学家 Geoffrey Leech 于 1983 年提出“礼貌原则”,他认为人们在交际当中都会自觉不自觉的遵守着语言的某种原则,即双方交流时应尽量地表示出礼貌,并减少一些不礼貌的语言表达方式。这种礼貌原则也可以应用到商务英语邮件中去。但是由于文化差异和自身行业特点,商务英语邮件中的礼貌有其自身的特殊性,和普通信函有明显的不同。所以不完全符合传统的礼貌原则,甚至很多时候会违反 Leech 的礼貌原则。鉴于此,笔者把礼貌原则和合作原则结合起来研究商务英语邮件中的礼貌问题,以期对礼貌的研究范围有所扩展并结合其特殊性研究实际商务英语邮件中的礼貌问题。一、商务英语与礼貌在经济全球化的时代,各国贸易往来越来越频繁。英语作为商务英语沟通中最通用的语言,也越来越受到人们的重视,并渐渐衍生出一种专门性的语言—商务英语。礼貌是商务英语重要的特点之一。不管是商务谈判中的口语语篇还是商务信函以及本文所研究的电子邮件中的书面语篇,双方合作礼貌的态度都是商务活动进行的前提条件。对于商务人员来说,时间就是金钱,高效快捷是商务沟通的主要特点。电子邮件作为现代商务人员沟通的主要方式,恰好迎合了这一特点。下面以笔者收集到的300 邮件中的一封为例,分析一下商务英语中的礼貌。Dear……We have our new Project and we required the fol-lowing items on the attached file. Please refer to the at-tached highlighted on YELLOW.Please send us your best price quote as soon aspossible.Thank you.Best Regards,……与商务英语信函相比,电子邮件的篇幅偏短。为了让忙碌的商务人员尽快看完邮件内容,往往直入主题。在语言表达上,体现礼貌的地方主要是开头的称呼,结尾的祝福。内容中间礼貌性的词语也主要以 Please 这种简短的词为主。传统语法中的越间接越礼貌就不适用于商务英语了。因为贸易双方分别来自世界不同的国家,所以英语的水平各不相同,语言表达能力也参差不齐,大家都用简单的词语来表达,有时甚至忽略不礼貌的语言,体现了双方合作的态度。二、电子邮件与礼貌电子语篇既吸收了口头语篇的特点,也吸收了书面语篇的特征,是两者的派生物。根据语篇的性质,我们可以判断出电子邮件是非同步的(asyn-chronous),既然是非同步电子语篇,就更多地具有书面语篇的特点。但电子邮件却又有书面语篇没有的其他特征,所以其礼貌也和书面语篇中的礼貌有所差别,为此笔者把电子邮件和传统的信函进行了比较。不管是来往信件还是邮件,对对方的称呼都是表达礼貌的一种体现。在商务信函中,每封信都是有开头都是有称呼的。如:王经理,赵秘书等。而电子邮件,尤其是商务邮件,却要灵活得多。大部分— 5 5 1 —

 邮件开头是 Dear 加姓名,或者是直接称呼姓名,有的没有称呼,直接进入内容表达。从礼貌角度来讲,这跟传统信函完全不同。写信的时候,加上称呼,是对别人身份地位的一种尊重,是重礼节的表现。而写邮件时,直呼其名,反而让人觉得熟悉而亲切。对于商务人员来讲,时间就是金钱。所以很多邮件没有称呼,直入主题,这也节省了读件人的时间。再看结尾。应用文格式所限,传统信函都有结尾署名和汉语中“此致敬礼”之类的语言,这也被认为是礼貌的表达。在邮件中,结尾的形式有如下几种:署名加礼貌结语;署名;既没有署名也没有礼貌结语;附名片。而不管是哪种形式都不会影响双方的沟通。三、不同语境中的礼貌笔者认为言语是否礼貌,不完全取决于言语本身(即直接言语可能是礼貌的,而间接言语可能是不礼貌的),而在很大程度上取决于人们的认知期待(即是否与认知期待一致),认知期待又源于语境文化规约,因为不同语境或文化会有不同甚至相反的言语行为规范。一句话,礼貌就是满足人们的认知期待,符合特定语境文化的习惯规约,最终得体。本文把搜集到的商务英语邮件与某大学导师与学生之间的来往邮件做了比较发现,由于商务环境和学校环境的差别导致其语境不同,语言的礼貌方面也有很大的不同。首先从开头称呼上看,学校环境中,学生为了表示对老师的尊重,在给老师的邮件中,93%的学生采用比较正式的称呼。例如:ProfessorWang,Teacher Zhao 等。使用不恰当的称呼,会被老师认为是不礼貌的行为。而在商务英语邮件中,90%的邮件称呼都是 Dear + 姓名,还有一部分根本就没有称呼。但是却没有人认为这是不礼貌的。这种结果主要是语境不同导致的。其次从问候语方面来看,学生给老师的邮件中主要有以下几种:1)Greetings + address term. 如:Hi + Dr. + F. N;Hello + dear + Dr + F. N. 2)Greetings + phaticcommunication. 如:Hello and hope u r in good health;Hi,I hope you've had a nice day so far;Hi,how areyou. 3)Greetings only. 其中 20% 的学生采用前两种方式,6%的学生采用第三种方式。而商务邮件中50%的邮件没有 Greetings. 大多数商务邮件为了节省时间直奔主题。再看寒暄语的使用方面。学生给老师的邮件中结尾经常用到寒暄语。如:hope u rgood,Hi again and hope everything goes great withyou,Good Night professor,F. N,I hope you are feelingbetter now. 而在商务英语邮件中这种寒暄语用得非常少。四、商务英语邮件中请求策略的礼貌可以将“请求”简单地定义为说话者通过语言表达自身某种需求的行为,因此请求在某种程度上对听话者施加了满足这种需求的责任或义务,从而威胁到听话者的面子(FACE)。请求行为又被称为“面子威胁行为”(Face - threatening Acts),因此请求者在发出请求时,通常会尽量缓和请求的语气,赋予其礼貌的内涵。Blum - Kulka et al(1989:8 )通过言语行为实现策略的跨文化研究(CCSARP),发现请求策略与礼貌密不可分,并根据礼貌程度由低到高的顺序将请求策略分成三类九级:a. 直接请求(impositives)1)祈使句(Mood derivable):Clean up thatmess.2)显性施为句(Performative)指请求者通过使用一些施为动词,如 demand,request,ask 等直接明确地表述该请求行为的强求语气:I’m asking you toclean up the mess.3)委婉施为句(Hedged performatives),与显性施为句相比,说话者表述请求行为时,使用委婉表达方式,如在施为动词前添加 would like,以缓和请求言语行为的强求语气:I would like to ask you toclean up the kitchen now.4)义务陈述句(Obligation statements)指请求者通过陈述对方须履行的义务来表达请求行为。此类请求句通常以第二人称为主语,并包含 must,should,have to 等情态动词:You will have to movethat car.5)愿望陈述句(Want statements),指请求者通过一些情感动词,如 want,need,look forward to 表述希望对方能够满足他提出的要求:I really wantyou to stop bothering me.b. 规约性间接请求(conventionally indirect)6)建议(Suggestory formulae)指请求者以建议的方式委婉地向对方提出要求:Let’s play a game.7)可能性询问(Query preparatory)指请求者以询问对方完成某行为的能力或意愿的方式委婉地提出要求,此类请求句通常包含 can /could,will /would 等情态动词:Could you clean up the kitchennow,please?c. 暗示(hints)暗示指请求者通过非常委婉间接的方式表述自己的请求意图,该意图只有在上下文语境中才能被对方理解。8)显性暗示(Strong hints):The game is bor-— 6 5 1 —

 ing.9)模糊暗示(Mild hints):We’ve been playingthis game for over an hour now.由于 Blum - Kulka 等人的课题研究对象来自七个不同的国家,因此他们的研究发现在很大程度上能够客观正确地反映出不同文化背景下的人们在实施请求行为时常用的语言策略。但是,由于研究者在收集请求语言策略的过程中主要采取的方法是语篇填空测试法(Discourse - Completion Test),因此该研究结果并不能完全真实地体现交际双方在日常生活环境中实际使用的请求策略。实际上在日常生活中当我们需要对方告知信息时,我们会经常使用以下这种直接提问的请求策略,例如:How long willit take if I walk to the shopping center?或 What doyou think about this movie?显而易见 Blumkulka 等人的调查研究只包括了行动请求,并未包括一方向另一方提出的信息请求。在外贸交易过程中,当买方要求卖方告知交货期时,他们会常常在邮件中直接提问“When can you ship the orders?”。根据 Grice (1975:45 )提出的合作原则和 Leech(1983:65)提出的礼貌原则,在双方的会话过程中,如果一方向对方提出问题,往往期待对方尽快给予正确的回答;而对方在领会请求者的意图之后,出于礼貌一般给出相关的回答。因此,笔者认为如果请求者通过一般疑问句或特殊疑问句的方式要求对方提供信息,这种方式应该属于直接请求策略,其礼貌程度应该与祈使句比较接近。电子邮件在商务环境中应用最广泛的沟通方式,在电子语篇中偏书面语。把礼貌原则和合作原则结合起来解释商务英语电子邮件中的礼貌更符合商务英语的环境。商务英语邮件中的礼貌有别于普通语篇中的礼貌,不能完全遵照传统的礼貌原则来研究。比如,在商务英语邮件中,并不是越间接越礼貌,很多时候是越直接越礼貌。语用学中,语境是很重要的概念,把语境的理论应用于商务英语邮件中礼貌的研究,可扩展礼貌的研究范围,丰富礼貌的研究内容。本文把商务英语、电子邮件、语境、语用学中的请求策略分别列出来,和礼貌结合起来研究,揭示了礼貌的语用本质。电子邮件作为沟通的重要方式,应该得到更多学者的重视。目前这方面的研究还比较少,还不够系统。把语言学中的理论和实际的电子邮件相结合是很好的研究方向。把理论应用于实践,指导电子邮件的写作和理解,有重要的实际应用价值。本文初探了商务电子邮件中的礼貌,以期能为其他学者做出更深刻的研究提供思路和方向。参考文献:[1] Blum - kulka S.
